about

I wrote this piece while I was living in Amsterdam at the end of 2013, having only a mike and my laptop (I was unable to fit my 7 kilo loop pedal within my luggage limit). After living by myself for a few months in Amsterdam, I was beginning to feel pretty isolated. I found I was interacting with my closest friends from back home solely through skype, facebook, instagram and other social media. In some ways it felt good to see what people were up to, but it also felt a bit fake, in that people (including myself) would tend to only post positive aspects of themselves. We all subconsciously only want to show the best pictures of ourselves and don't want to dwell on any of the negatives. Our portraits on social media feel like a mask, and when we spend too much time in these flawless, virtual worlds, they start to overtake us, overwrite our identities and prompt us to forget any bad events that may actually be good for building our characters. We adjust our friendships, because it's easier to see what people are sharing by logging in rather than calling or texting. I find I have to actively remember which of my friends are not on facebook so that I contact them via other means. I find social media and our interaction with it fascinating. How it can alter our memories, friendships and deep down, our own identities.

lyrics

Take me away from this reality.
I much prefer my imagination.

Paint the face you see in the mirror,
Wear your clothes to cover up your shapeliness,
Are you satisfied with your status update?
You know you gotta look good in the Facebooks.

Read me, write me, please comment on this post.
It doesn't matter if you stay true.

Solo Sydney musician Astrid Zeman creates lush, ambient soundscapes using a loop pedal, guitar, keyboard and voice. By plucking, tapping, scratching, strumming, knocking and singing into resonant cavities, Astrid manipulates each instrument in multiple ways to extract its full range of frequencies and textures. She infuses her wistful soprano vocals into these richly layered strings and textures. ... more
