about

“You Will Outlast Me, All! Even the Babe-In-Arms” is about altered states of consciousness and separation from the corporal world. Drawing upon dream states, subconscious utterings and immaterial identity, Astrid plays with elements of whispering, breath and autonomic responses in her soundscapes to invoke a sense of transcendence from our somatic selves. The main technique Astrid draws upon in her performance and compositions is to wield tactile instruments in various ways to generate sounds that span the entire frequency spectrum, much like other loop artists including Andrew Bird, Owen Pallett and Zoë Keating. Applying this principle to her own voice and body, she has extended her vocal repertoire to incorporate throat singing, tongue clicking and other mouth manipulations, taking large influence from Camille’s album Le Fil.

Counting Sheep, the title track from her EP, was inspired by Paolo Coehlo’s the Alchemist - a novel about individual transformation and unspoken desires that bubble, brew and emerge from within dreams. Dark Horses, the second track from her EP, manipulates subconscious mechanisms to their fullest, invoking an uncomfortable and unsettling feeling of danger, death and decay. The third track, State Transitions, is an abstract, meditative vocal drone combining throat singing with harmonic singing and primal yelping. The final track, Imagination, is about the manipulation of our own identities and true selves within virtual worlds, leading to obsession, addiction, desperation for external approval and the eventual disappearance of our autonomy. Each of these pieces highlights loss of control and altered mind states, through deliberate direction from the self or through the gradual, barely noticeable influence of one’s surroundings and environment.
